In research published in volume 14 of the Journal of Pain Research, researchers at The First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University evaluated the early clinical outcomes of the full-endoscopic posterior lumbar interbody fusion (Endo-PLIF) technique with epidural anesthesia (EA) for single-segment lumbar degenerative diseases. They found that Endo-PLIF with EA is a feasible and valuable technique for the treatment of single-segment lumbar degenerative diseases in selected patients. They used PEEK lumbar cages. According to research published in August of 2021 in the Journal of Neurosurgery, decompression with fusion compared to decompression alone is a better option for patients with isthmic spondylolisthesis. In a randomized controlled trial including 84 patients who were randomly assigned to one of two groups, primary outcome parameters were scores on the Roland Disability Questionnaire (RDQ), separate visual analog scales (VASs) for back pain and leg pain, and patient reports of perceived recovery at 12-week and 2-year follow-ups. Decompression with instrumented fusion resulted in comparable short-term results, significantly better long-term outcomes, and fewer reoperations than decompression alone.
