3D-printed implants significantly improve bone growth. Specifically, 3D-printing is improving the adherence and growth of bone cells on implants. What is 3D-printing? 3D-printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is the future of spinal implants. This process can be used to complement traditional machinery or alone. With whatever material is being used, a 3D-printer will fuse the material one part at a time. This part is different from traditional manufacturing because the printer will not follow a mold. Instead, it will start with a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) file. This CAD file is a 3D figure. The 3D figure is then sliced into a thousand 2D sliced images by the computer. The 2D slices are primitive to make a solid object. The 3D-printing machine creates a tool path to create these 2D images and they are layered, or “added” on top of each other. In this way, this process is a layer-by-layer additive process. This process can use metals, ceramics, polymers, biodegradable materials. The Seattle Seahawks quarterback, Chris Carson, just underwent successful neck surgery. Specifically, he underwent cervical fusion surgery in late 2021. Carson hopes to get back to playing this year for the 2022-2023 season.

Becker Spine Review recently released 15 different surgeons’ predictions regarding the future of 3D printing in orthopedics. According to Peter Derman, MD, of the Texas Back Institute: “3D printing has allowed for the creation of spinal implants with unique structures and surfaces for optimizing fusion. I think that the next step in the utilization of this technology will be the widespread manufacture of truly patient-specific implants. While “off-the-shelf” options generally suffice, 3D-printed implants will feature geometries tailored to a patient’s anatomy and the desired correction. Stiffness could be modified based on bone density. However, logistical hurdles must first be addressed. These include developing systems by which patient imaging can be obtained by manufacturers and translated into implant designs, likely with the aid of artificial intelligence. The implants then need to be printed, sterilized, packaged, and shipped, and the entire process has to occur within a reasonable turnaround time.
